My friend, Delores Topliff, has created a book for anyone interested in obtaining their most rewarding trip to Israel. Her book includes historical facts, her adventures touring there nine times, plus wit, wisdom, recipes, and language tips. Below is the story behind her book, A Traveling Grandma’s Guide to Israel.
My Love Affair with Israel
As a kid living near a library, I loved learning about foreign countries and longed to travel. Until 1984, my biggest adventure was a 105-day mission trip teaching and training teachers in Colombian jungle settings on a tributary of the Amazon.
The small Christian college where I taught on Canada’s Alaska Highway decided to add more Bible classes. When someone suggested Bible Archaeology, I jumped on it. My favorite learning method is investigating subjects well enough to teach them.
Three weeks later a retired Biblical Archaeologist accompanied a friend to visit our remote location. What are the odds? Our administrator suggested I tell Bob Allen what I would be teaching. I had so little material, I blurted out, “Don’t you dare!” But she did. He insisted on providing books, slides, replicas—even genuine artifacts. I taught the class in the evenings that fall so neighboring communities could attend. Bob also flew up from California and was so pleased, he gave our college $3,000 IF I’d go to Israel to gain hands-on experience.
Forty years ago, that actually happened. My initial 36-day trip was so great, I worked hard to send myself eight more times. I’m in close touch with many there. Friends here asked me to connect them with contacts there and help plan their trips. Eventually, A Traveling Grandma’s Guide to Israel: Adventures, Wit, and Wisdom resulted. Available in print, eBook, and Audio, it’s over half memoir with many personal vignette’s into Israel’s unforgettable land and people. It even provides recipes and language tips. I happily share well-received slide-show talks to organizations and libraries from stories in the book.
Bob Allen’s one-time gift changed my life. Reading the book’s cameos and many insights into Israel’s hotly-contested land and peoples may change yours.
A summary from the back cover of the book: “A Traveling Grandma’s Guide to Israel: Adventures, Wit, and Wisdom, is an inspiring and heartwarming account of a grandma’s many journeys throughout Israel for forty years…Whether you’re a seasoned traveler or armchair adventurer, this book is your ticket to exploring Israel as few have seen it.”
