Heather Greer is an author for Scrivenings Press. I met her in 2021 at the Scrivening Press author retreat and she’s the kind of person you enjoy meeting. I walked away from my first interaction with her and thought, “I want her to be my friend.”
She’s an award-winning author, most recently she earned third place at the 2022 Selah Awards for Contemporary Romance with her book, Cake That!. Today, she answered some fun questions and shared some of her process for writing.
What is your superpower?
Does the ability to trip over nothing at all count as a superpower? I’m really good at being klutzy, and it doesn’t just show in physical situations. I’m pretty clumsy in social situations too.If that doesn’t count, then, I’d have to say baking is my superpower. It’s one of my favorite stress relievers and the way I break the ice at new jobs. People are always happy to see the person with the baked goods.
If you could have an unlimited supply of one thing for the rest of your life, what would you like?
Money. I’d like to be able to give endlessly to the ministries that are special to me and help my children with their needs. But don’t get the idea that I’m totally altruistic with my choice. I’d also love the ability to travel any time I want. I’ve never been able to travel, and I think I’d really like it.
What are you working on right now?
Catching up on my life outside of writing!
July was a tough one for me, because I had a novella and a novel due to my publisher within 2 weeks of each other. Since the novel, Window of Opportunity, is a historical romance when I usually write contemporary, it was difficult for me. I love the way it turned out though. I learned so much about the 1920s! I can’t wait until January when readers can meet Evangeline and Brendan.
The novella, Sweet Delivery, is part of the Love Delivered novella collection releasing in February. It was a lot of fun as I revisited a character from one of my previous books, Cake That!. Readers had very strong feelings about Will in that story, and I’m anxious to see how they feel about him after reading his story in this novella.
What is your next writing project?
I’m working on a synopsis and the first two chapters of another novella for a proposal three of my author friends and I are sending to the publisher for a Christmas novella collection. My working title for it is The Santa Claus Set-Up. It’s a Christmas Wonderland (imagine a place to buy your tree, visit Santa, see his workshop, pet a reindeer, and buy Christmas treats all in one stop) where some scheming teenage elves decide Santa and Mrs. Claus should be together in real life. Christmas hijinks ensue when Santa and Mrs. Claus don’t immediately fall for their plans.
How do you relax and recharge when you step away from writing?
My newest obsession is making buttons. Specifically, book swag buttons. I’m using the ones specific to my books as part of the way I say thank you to my launch teams. If they’re on each launch team, they could collect a whole set to match my books.
I also read, make cards, and bake. I like a variety of hobbies to keep things interesting. If I don’t feel like button making but need a break, I can read. Don’t feel like that either? I can make some cards or a batch of cookies. Each hobby allows me to be creative in different ways than my writing does.
What genre would you like to consider in the future that is different from that/those you do now?
I would love to write a middle grade fantasy and children’s books. I’ve always loved great children’s literature. Even with all four of my children fully grown, I have shelves of children’s books I won’t part with. To tell a story that captures the hearts and imaginations of little ones, especially if it’s beautifully illustrated, sounds like a wonderful gift to me.
What’s your best advice for other writers?
Write the way God created you to write. There are so many great tools and systems to help writers on their journeys. But not every tool, tip, or system is for you. If your creativity flows better when you hand write first, then, write your words out before you type them. If you need people or music or even silence to write at your best, create that type of space for yourself. There are many ways to create strong stories that readers will love. Find the way that works for you.

I love this. Best advice about writing, “Write the God created you to write.” I also admire all of Heather’s creative projects. I am finally getting back to something besides writing. I have an embroidery project started. Not creating any stress for myself, just a new outlet for my imagination.
Heather, I love your books. Just keep writing!
